History

Bungalowen

Frost Woods Homes Association began as in informal meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton Beatty in the early fall of 1935. The first annual meeting of the Association was held on April 13, 1936 at the home of Ray S. Owen, also known as Bungalowen.

The Association was developed in order to preserve the natural beauty of the area and to "promote a harmony of architectural expression which will give distinction to the whole and which will give to each home builder protection against similarity or duplication in exterior design of other houses erected in the neighborhood." (Beatty) Most of the homes are built on double and some even triple lots. This has resulted in a spacious feeling throughout this wooded area.

The Association works with the City of Monona to preserve and improve the area's three fine recreational facilities: Frost Woods Park, Frost Woods Beach (once Owen Beach in name of Ray S. Owen), and Frost Island, owned and maintained by the Association as a wilderness area and wildlife refuge. The park consists of a playground, basketball courts, and a baseball field.

The Association sponsors a number of social activities. In the past, activities included a Fourth of July celebration, with a kiddie parade and ball game; a late afternoon picnic on the Marshall Owen estate with games; and an evening fireworks display (which is now put on by the City of Monona). Today's activities include an Annual Clambake held the Sunday after Labor Day at Frost Woods Beach and a Winter Social with Hot Cocoa and S'mores held on Frost Island.

Frost Woods Homes Association celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2011.
